Mini Icelandic Adventure

I figured that since I had a spare grand or so and a wee bit of free time, that the days before Christmas should be spent in an expensive foreign country rather than preparing anything for Christmas day. I chose Iceland.

There isn’t a time difference between the UK and Iceland and, luckily for me, it’s only a two hour flight. I don’t handle journeys very well so I probably didn’t appreciate the trip as much as I’d have liked. The anti-sickness tablets I took weren’t ideal since they made me so drowsy but I’d rather be tired than throwing up!

We stayed in Reykjavik in a surprisingly fancy hotel near the centre. The centre was excitingly Christmasy. The days didn’t start till 10am due to the dark mornings and, the first time we ventured out into the city, everything was coated in a light dusting of snow and small lights glimmered in every tree. It was a strangely magical place, with the pre-dawn silence, the snow and the yellowish Christmas lights.

We visited a historic church, saw their pony’s unique gaits, marvelled at the geysers and waterfall, and stared at the mountain ranges. There was too much snow to see the Northern Lights and the whales didn’t want to play but it was still one of the most amazing, breathtaking experiences of my life.

Half Term

Holidays from work throw me, big time. I become so accustomed to working crazy hours that it unsettles me when I get a break. I feel like I waste my holidays if I haven’t got anything planned and, since my boyfriend couldn’t get the time off and my friends were working, I decided to pick up a couple of extra shifts with my job on the side.

Now these shifts are almost always with the same family who I work with term time as well as holidays so it’s all familiar. This yp has, over the last couple of months, become more and more comfortable with me. Being another young person who doesn’t speak, I feel pretty smug that she calls me Ra Ra. This is because I can do this growling roar which is, apparently, hilarious. Anyway, the holidays usually means she’s been sleeping during the afternoon so I get to take her for walks of an evening instead of just playing quietly before bed which has been pretty fun.

The only thing I had planned is to visit my friend in the north. She’s fairly recently had a major operation so now she’s finished resting up I’m pestering her with my boring stories and going out for fancy meals and walking her dog round a river. We’re spending a lot of time talking about her brother’s wedding which is coming up in a few months which is exciting. I’m a tom boy by nature and the talk of the moment is actually seeing me in a dress. We’ll see if that actually happens.

This is when I notice that I’m actually pretty boring so I guess I’ll sign off here and hope I’ve got something more entertaining to write about next week.
